CREATIVE MIND OF THE MONTH

Grace: What is your name and where are you from?

Matilda: Matilda Goude from Stockholm Sweden.

Grace: How long have you been at the Art Institute?

Matilda: Since April 2013. I moved here specifically for AI.

Grace: What are you studying?

Matilda: Fashion marketing and Management.

Grace: What made you want to study Fashion Marketing?

Matilda: I wanted to continue my fashion design degree with something more in depth and well rounded.

Grace: Where do you see yourself when you graduate?

Matilda: Professionally: living in Stockholm or Spain or in Europe in general. Working for the brand & Other Stories (http://www.stories.com/us/).  Artistically: Keep studying. I want to study Textile development to put my own art onto clothes. I’m developing pieces right now with abstract watercolor and pen that I would love to see printed on fabrics. I can see it working unbelievably well on a bomber jacket.

Grace: What about & Other Stories inspires you?

Matilda: They have good brand ethics. Top quality materials and beautiful design aesthetics.

Grace: What is your favorite medium?

Matilda: Watercolor and ink.

Grace: What inspires you?

Matilda: With water color the shapes and forms inspires me. With ink and more detailed work I’m inspired by architecture.

Grace: Describe your process

Matilda: I have 5 different notebooks. One I always have with me. I start with something simple, just black and white. Then I start to build it through the sketchbooks. After that I take it onto the             actual surface I want to work with for the final product. Then I’ll make it into a digital copy and               perfect it there.

Grace: Do you like the idea or profiting from art?

Matilda: I don’t sell my originals because I like to build my collection. Prints are all upon request so I won’t make prints of something until someone asks.

Grace: Have you ever had an “aha!” moment?

Matilda: Yeah, with watercolor. I was afraid to use too much water. Then I had an “aha!” moment when I realized that a lot of water is what helps bring the shapes to life.

Grace: What is your favorite project that you’ve worked on?

Matilda: Water color ink collection. I want to see it on fabric—something drapey. I use tubes of water color to get better pigment. The fun part about abstract water color is that you can flip the   canvas and then it’s a whole new picture.

Grace: Have you found your own style yet?

Matilda: I have definitely found my own style and how I like to work—my procedure. I like to take those steps into different mediums and techniques. The only medium I hate is oil because it’s too precise.

Grace: Where else is creativity part of your life?

Matilda: I’m very interested in interior design and where I like to live, how I like to live and where things are placed. Like random stuff—like what color flowers we bring in.

Grace: Where is one place you would want to see your art.

Matilda: An abstract mural in Berlin. In Berlin—you can see the damages from the war, but you can also see that people are creating art from the ruins. Its contributes to an amazing vibe.

Grace: How have you adapted to being here?

Matilda: I love being here. Its taught me so much. I can’t compare my artistic self of who I am to who I was, I’m much more individual in my work now. There’s something about when you move to a      completely foreign place by yourself that you are forced to find yourself all over again. There is           no one there to influence you to be a certain way, so everything you do is completely for your own benefit.

Grace: How old were you when you started to paint and draw?

Matilda: My grandma has been my main driving factor. She had me and my sister doing self portraits when I was 2 or 3 until 18. My grandma paints orthodox religious paintings. She used to bring me to her seminars and sculpture classes. My Mom is artistic as well she’s the head visual merchandiser for H&M. That’s where I got my visual eye from. As a person who is born with and artistic, eye it helps to have an upbringing that also pushes you to focus your eye.
